Heat Pumps: freeze protect the drains to avoid breakdown

Air source heat pumps have seen a very large expansion in the last 10 years in Europe as they are very energy efficient and therefore enable savings to be made. These pieces of equipment are designed following thermodynamic cycles and require periodic defrosting. These defrosting cycles are necessary for the heat pump to work efficiently; therefore defrosted condensate is collected into a tray underneath the heat pump and evacuated into drains. Unfortunately, when the temperature level is close to zero in winter, condensates freeze, ice accumulates in the drains and the tray which prevent the heat pump from working properly.
